What is a Release Train Engineer?

The RTE is the chief Scrum Master for the Agile Release Train (ART) — a team of Agile teams (typically 50–125 people) that plans, commits, and delivers together. The RTE doesn’t manage people; they facilitate flow. Think of them as the conductor aligning every section of the orchestra to a single cadence.

Servant leader

Coaches teams, Scrum Masters, and Product Owners to high performance — removing impediments rather than issuing orders.

Facilitator of flow

Runs PI Planning, ART Sync, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt — keeping a team-of-teams synchronized on a cadence.

Dependency hunter

Surfaces cross-team dependencies and risks early, escalates what teams can’t resolve, and protects the flow of value.
